Flavor #20: Understanding (Binah; Tebunah; Sekel; Syniemi)

(Complete list and links to the 31 Flavors of Wisdom)

Meaning, essence, and significance: Understanding is the ability to perceive the deeper meaning behind information, discerning patterns and insights that lead to wise behavior. The Hebrew term Binah refers to discernment (#11) and comprehension, enabling one to distinguish between nuances. Tebunah denotes deep insight and the capacity to apply knowledge effectively. Sekel embodies prudence and good sense, guiding sound judgment. In Greek, Syniemi means to bring together various pieces of information (like assembling a puzzle) to comprehend the whole, reflecting an integrative understanding, that’s only achieved if two are in dialogue working together to accomplish the task. Collectively, these concepts highlight understanding as a synthesis of knowledge (#3) and discernment, essential for wise living.

Practical Appearance and Nutritional Value: Understanding manifests when two people are involved in active listening that results in feeling heard, thoughtful reflection marked by comprehending the issues before you, and empathetic responses, that demonstrate you’ve allowed what you’ve heard to sink in, deeply get it, then demonstrate you got it.  These principles are to occur in your communication process (demonstrating you understand) and are a result of your process also (feeling understood). Understanding involves pausing to consider different perspectives before making decisions, which generates harmonious relationships and effective problem-solving. This quality of behavior nourishes personal growth by fostering patience, enhances communication, and builds trust. Its nutritional value serves as a foundation for making informed choices and developing deeper connections with others.

Who deserves some of this seasoning?  “My daughter deserves a generous serving of understanding. This means attentively listening to her concerns, validating her feelings, and gifting patience and empathy to her. It involves creating a supportive environment where she feels heard and valued, encouraged by our open dialogue, and assisted to navigate challenges with confidence. By embodying understanding, I aim to model compassionate behavior, deliver emotional intelligence to strengthen our relationship.”
